Dr Francesco Del Galdo
Identification and validation of biomarkers in Scleroderma
Date awarded: April 2010
Research start date: May 2010
Total value of grant: £764,000
Duration: 4 years
Funding Body: EULAR
Summary: Currently there are no laboratory tests that allow the monitoring of the activity of diseases in Scleroderma as well as other fibrotic conditions. Dr Del Galdo, as coordinator of a consortium of 6 Universities through Europe, has been recently granted a 4 years translational research project aimed to identify markers of fibrogenesis and vasculopathy in Systemic Sclerosis using both proteomics and microRNA identification techniques. The project will be developed through Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit (LMBRU), a multi-disciplinary, patient-focussed, research group. Activities within the LMBRU are built around the principle that targeted, individualised therapy in appropriately identified patients will result in improved patient care.
