Sounding Out Knee Function

There exist no safe means of quantifying the functional performance (relative to translational and rotational movements) within knee protheses to allow designs/surgical procedures to be improved within the NHS. The proposal aims to investigate whether ultrasound can be used to detect the position of joint replacement compoments relative to one another. If successful the research would support the development of a clinical prototype.  The technology would exist in the NHS alongside video gait analysis to improve imaging accuracy currently limited by the movement of skin markers relative to the joint. The project is entirely novel as current Ulltrasound detection technologies are designed to investigate soft tissues only.
