About
Pete Culmer graduated from the University of Leeds with an MEng degree in Mechatronics. He returned to undertake a PhD in healthcare technologies by designing novel control strategies for a robotic arm-rehabilitation system. He was awarded a post-doctorate position to advance this research and worked closely with a multidisciplinary team (including clinicians, therapists and psychologists) to evaluate the system in clinical studies involving people with stroke. The research has won industry awards from NHS Medipex, Scottish Health Innovations Ltd and National Instruments. He continued working in this multidisciplinary area in an NHS funded project to develop an instrumented walking-aid to improve gait.
In his STRF role he will work on the development of new surgical technologies for minimally invasive surgery, with a focus on oncology applications. The research will involve close integration with the surgical community to ensure it is effectively translated from the lab to the operating theatre.
Collaboration
Pete is involved in a long-running collaboration with Prof. Mark Mon-Williams (Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds) and Dr Justin Williams (Dept Child Health, University of Aberdeen Medical School) on ‘KiniLab’; a portable computer system for human movement assessment. He is currently working on its commercialisation with industrial partners.
Grants Awarded
● Co-Investigator on Leeds EPSRC Collaboration Grant.
Short-term funding to establish new interdisciplinary collaborations between the School of Mechanical Engineering and Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds
