About
John Dixon has 36 years experience in Pharmaceutical Research & Development associated with and responsible for research into Respiratory, Inflammation, Cardiovascular and Gastrointestinal diseases. He invented one marketed cardiovascular drug and several others reaching advanced Clinical Development. He was Head of Medicinal Chemistry for 23 years at Fisons, Vice President Preclinical R&D in Astra Charnwood for 4 years and Vice President Discovery at AstraZeneca Charnwood for 9 years. His recent responsibility involved over 400 scientists in Respiratory and Inflammation. His role encompassed all aspects of Drug Research into Drug Development crossing international boundaries and including inter-company collaborations.
As VP Discovery in AstraZeneca he delivered 35 new drug development candidates mainly for Respiratory disease. In his last year at AstraZeneca his group nominated almost 30% of AstraZeneca’s candidate portfolio. Currently 2 Charnwood compounds are in Phase III one of which with blockbuster potential is approaching registration. 2 compounds are in Phase IIb and several more in early clinical studies.
Whilst mainly directed at oral drugs, his research involved additional routes of administration; inhalation, topical (skin and eye) and intravenous injection. Recently he built one of the largest inhalation project portfolios in the industry aimed at Asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions including infection.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Member of the American Chemical Society and served on several professional and academic committees. He was awarded an honorary D.Sc. from the University of Loughborough.
He is now an independent consultant in Pharmaceutical R&D working with organisations of all types (universities, charities, industry) working in most therapy areas in 7 different countries.
