Technology Groups
World-class research requires world-class technological support, both in terms of equipment and highly-skilled technical operators. Where there is commonality in the technological infrastructure required to support research across academic or clinical themes, a collaborative approach to design and application provides the greatest opportunity to invest in modern technological platforms. Our approach is to establish generic technology support groups that will identify the developments required to ensure that relevant world-class infrastructure is available to support biomedical research across the University and NHS.
Technology Groups are provided with income targets tailored according to the make-up of the group. Staff operating in a technical support capacity are expected to recover 80% of full economic costs (FECs) associated with the technology group by year 5. This is anticipated to be achieved by including technology support costs on associated grant applications and by securing funding for large items of equipment through traditional routes. Where technology support staff are research active, they are also expected to meet agreed income targets by securing research grants in their own right. The STRF funding model is used in these circumstances. Performance measures and success criteria are developed (tailored to each group) to ensure the impact of these groups on research activity across broad research networks is realised.
The following Technology Groups have been established:
Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (MCCB) Technology Group
Bioinformatics Technology Group
BioScreening Technology Group
