An official welcome to Professor Selby!

We are delighted to announce that Professor Peter Selby has been appointed as Joint Director of the BHRC, after serving as acting Director since last August.  This post will continue until July 2013. 

As a Joint Director of the BHRC, Professor Selby’s role will be to represent the interests of the University of Leeds in this major strategic partnership, working alongside Professor Stephen Smye from the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust to lead the BHRC in promoting translational research across Leeds.

Professor Selby is a consultant physician at St James’s University Hospital and has had a distinguished career in cancer research and cancer care.  In 2000 Professor Selby was appointed as Director of the National Cancer Research Network, which was charged with providing a world class clinical infrastructure ,  and was successful in increasing the clinical trials activity in the UK in cancer four-fold and providing a model which substantially influenced developments for other aspects of health care in the  U K and in many other countries across the world.  He was appointed Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998, and awarded a CBE in 2001 for services to cancer research and cancer care.  In 2005 he became Joint Director of the UK Clinical Research Network, which is now responsible for overseeing the development of clinical trials within the NHS across all of healthcare.  In 2007 Peter became President of the Association of Cancer Physicians and also won the Pfizer Excellence in Oncology Lifetime Achievement award.  Peter is also Director of the CR UK Clinical Centre and Clinical Director of LIMM.
